Moonage Daydream is a new David Bowie documentary from director Brett Morgen. Unlike 2020’s Stardust, which starred Johnny Flynn as a young Bowie, Moonage Daydream has the approval of the David Bowie estate. This means, among other things, Bowie’s original music features in the film.
The trailer begins with a voiceover from US television presenter Dick Cavett. The audio is lifted from Bowie’s appearance on The Dick Cavett Show in December 1974.
“Questions have arisen such as, Who is he? What is he? Where did he come from?” says Cavett. “Is he a creature of a foreign power? Is he a creep? Is he dangerous? Is he smart? Dumb? Nice to his parents? Real or put on? Crazy? Sane? Man? Woman? Robot? What is this?”
The next voice we hear is Bowie’s own. “All people, no matter who they are,” he says, “all wish they’d appreciated life more. It’s what you do in life that’s important, not how much time you have or what you wish you’d done.” The trailer concludes with Bowie saying, “Life is fantastic.”
Moonage Daydream is advertised as an immersive cinematic experience. Morgen spent a reported five years on the project, and it’ll be showing at IMAX later this year. Watch the trailer below.
Morgen directed the 2015 documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which chronicled the Nirvana front person’s life from childhood up until his death by suicide in 1994. Morgen also made the 2017 film, Jane, about the renowned primatologist Jane Goodall.
