Three Lobed Recordings has announced a new five-song Sonic Youth rarities collection, In/Out/In. Track two, the seven-and-a-half minute long ‘In & Out’, can be heard now.
In/Out/In is made up of recordings from 2000-2010. It was a productive period for the band, giving rise to the albums NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000), Murray Street (2002), Sonic Nurse (2004), Rather Ripped (2006) and The Eternal (2009).
Producer Jim O’Rourke worked on NYC Ghosts & Flowers and joined as an official Sonic Youth band member for Murray Street and Sonic Nurse. O’Rourke features on the In/Out/In tracks ‘Social Static’ and ‘Out & In’, both of which were recorded at the band’s NY studio space, Echo Canyon, in 2000.
It’s just the core quartet of Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley on the collection’s opening three tracks, ‘Basement Contender’ (recorded in Northampton, MA in 2008), ‘In & Out’ (recorded at soundcheck in Pomona, CA in 2010) and ‘Machine’ (recorded in 2008).
The Eternal was Sonic Youth’s last album before they broke-up in 2011. The break-up followed an announcement from Gordon and Moore that they had separated after 27 years of marriage. Gordon released her debut solo album, No Home Record, in 2019. Moore’s latest solo album, screen time, came out in February 2021.
In/Out/In will be released digitally and on LP, CD, and cassette on Friday, 11th March.
