Russia Barred From Competing In The Eurovision Song Contest 2022

The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is set to take place in Turin, Italy, from Tuesday, 10th – Saturday, 14th May. However, one country that won’t be sending a representative to Turin is Russia.

The executive board of the European Broadcasting Union announced that Russia had been removed from the 2022 song contest in light of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. “The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute,” said the EBU in a statement.

The board went on to say, “The EBU is an apolitical member organization of broadcasters committed to upholding the values of public service. We remain dedicated to protecting the values of a cultural competition which promotes international exchange and understanding, brings audiences together, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage.”

It is worth noting that the EBU pushed back against calls to move the 2019 contest from Israel, despite Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians.

Italy earned hosting honours as a result of its representatives, Måneskin, winning last year’s contest in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Former The Voice contestant Sheldon Riley will represent Australia at Eurovision 2022 after winning SBS’ Eurovision: Australia Decides 2022 competition. Riley claimed victory by a margin of three votes over Perth prog-metal band, Voyager.
