Maddy Jane has officially released her third EP, Clear As Mud Pt. 1. The six-track effort arrives today (June 27th) via Community Music as the official follow-up to 2022’s Island Time EP. The Bruny Island native, who is currently based in Sydney, worked on the EP with Alex Burnett – formerly of Sparkadia, and recently a producer to the likes of Thelma Plum and Hockey Dad. She has described the sound of her new EP as “Tasmaniana” – ie. Americana done in the style of a Tasmanian.
“This is a new chapter,” she said in a statement. “It’s the most powerful and self-assured place I’ve ever made music from. I’ve come to understand that songs are spells — they hold meaning, intention and energy. I’m not stuck in a machine anymore. This is just the beginning.” Prior to the EP’s release, Jane rolled out several singles – including ‘It Can’t Be Heartbreak If It’s Not Love’ from November last year, ‘A Woman Is A Woman’ back in February and ‘Thylacine’ earlier this month.

The EP also marks Jane’s first release since coming out as bisexual, with the songs celebrating this in a manner she describes as “country, rock and queer as hell”. “Working out [that] I’m queer, realising how the male gaze and cultural expectations shaped me, and falling in love with women —these things helped me reclaim my power, and find real assurance in who I am,” she said.
Jane and her band – composed of Ollie Thorpe (Ian Moss, The Whitlams Black Stump), Lozz Benson (Angus & Julia Stone), Lucy Warriner (Mega Fäuna) and Ross Tipper (Little Bastard, Pan-Pacific Grand Prix, Lady Lyon) – are set to perform at this year’s King Street Crawl. They will play at the Marlborough Hotel – AKA the Marly Bar – in Newtown on Sunday, July 13th alongside the likes of Redd., Stevan, GRXCE, FVNERAL, Gena Stone and Stumps. More info can be found here.
