Kendrick Lamar Travels To Ghana For New Spotify Documentary

In celebration of his 35th birthday on Friday, Spotify have unveiled a new documentary which follows Kendrick Lamar during a trip to Accra, Ghana ahead of the release of his latest album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.

Simply titled A Day In Ghana With Kendrick Lamar, the four-minute documentary does what it says on the tin, following Kendrick as he visits the West African city alongside manager and collaborator Dave Free.

“First time in Ghana,” Kendrick was heard saying in the recently-released trailer for the doco. “I couldn’t even tell you what day it is. I’m just being in the moment. This life shit, it’s all about an experience, and everybody got their own different experience.”

The documentary also sees Kendrick visiting Ghana’s Freedom Skate Park, which had been supported by late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away in November of 2021. As Kendrick explains, he noted he’d been thinking about Abloh, and “what he means to them as far as letting them have this creative space for them to enjoy themselves. That’s special.”

Elsewhere, Kendrick discusses his favourite line on his new album (“You really need some therapy/Real nigga need no therapy,” from ‘Father Time’), while also expressing his gratitude about being able to be in Ghana to avoid all the discourse that surrounded the record and its release.

Kendrick released his fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, just last month, with the record topping charts globally, including here in Australia. In promotion for the new record, Kendrick is set to make his return to Australia later this year, having announced half-a-dozen dates for December alongside the release of his new album.
