Kelis Responds To Beyoncé Removing ‘Milkshake’ Interpolation: ‘I Won’

Kelis has responded after Beyoncé removed an interpolation of Kelis’ 2003 single ‘Milkshake’ from her new album, Renaissance. The singer took to Instagram to hit back at fans, noting that she “won” in the grand scheme of things.

The controversy began prior to the release of Beyoncé’s Renaissance, when Kelis spoke out against the track ‘Energy’, which included an interpolation of ‘Milkshake’, labelling its use as “theft”.

A few days after the album’s release, it was reported that the interpolation had been removed from ‘Energy’ on digital versions of the album, though no official statement from Beyoncé was issued. Now, as Complex has reported, Kelis has been responding to comments from Beyoncé fans on various social media posts, most of which are completely unrelated to the controversy.

In a series of posts shared by Complex, Kelis can be seen calling Beyoncé’s “beyhive” fanbase “a joke” and a “cult”, disputing the claim that she’s a “cry baby”, and asserting her belief that “you can’t be afraid to speak up for yourself no matter how big the bully’s [sic]”. Responding to a fan who simply wrote “the sample is gone”, Kelis said, “I won lol only a moron wouldn’t understand that”.

Along with the controversy sparked by ‘Energy’, the Renaissance track ‘Heated’ came under fire for the use of ableist language. The controversial line in question has since been changed.
