GEM’s New Single ‘No Ordinary Days’ Glows With Optimism

There’s no doubt that the last 15 months have been a pretty dark time. Particularly for our friends in Victoria, there’s been so much doubt and uncertainty cast upon present time.

Sydney producer GEM has a new single, ‘No Ordinary Days’, and with it, she’s taking on the uncertainty, and replacing it with a smashing dose of optimism.

GEM originally wrote ‘No Ordinary Days’ in early 2020 from her home in Surry Hills whilst Sydney was in lockdown. She captures the importance of being present eloquently throughout her carefully penned lyrics, pairing it confidently against a mellow, sunny instrumental.

“We can all turn magic from the mundane, it’s a choice we can each make. To be truly present and get to a place where you can feel grateful and alive,” she says.

‘No Ordinary Days’ will feature on GEM’s forthcoming EP, which she has described as “relaxed, downtempo and not in your face in anyway.”

The record is a personal one, and in her own words, “it had to feel like me. So I could introduce myself to listeners as I truly am. No pretense, or falsehoods just my real stories made by me in the style that I love so much.”

Despite the current restrictions globally, it’s been a fruitful time for GEM, who was just one of six producers to be chosen for the coveted GRAMMY Next program. She is the first Australian woman to ever be chosen. As part of the program, she’s being mentored by Grammy-nominated producer Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, who has written for H.E.R., among others.

Earlier in the year, she lent a touch of disco-house to The Soul Movers’ track ‘Hot Sauce’.
