Evan Rachel Wood Gives Marilyn Manson The Finger Covering ‘You Get What You Give’

Actor Evan Rachel Wood has shared a live cover of ‘You Get What You Give’ via her Instagram page. “For my fellow survivors who got slapped in the face this week,” she wrote in the caption, a nod to fellow survivors of Marilyn Manson’s alleged abuse.

Wood was performing at Hollywood venue The Bourbon Room. With accompaniment from guitarist Zane Carney, she broke into a cover of the New Radicals’ 1998 hit single ‘You Get What You Give’. Wood had to read the lyrics from her phone throughout, but her delivery certainly didn’t lack conviction.

The performance followed Manson’s public reemergence last week in connection with the new Kanye West album, Donda. First, Kanye brought Manson out at his Chicago livestream event late last week. Then, when the album dropped, it was revealed that Manson – real name Brian Warner – had co-written the tracks ‘Jail’ and ‘Jail, Pt. 2’, the latter of which also features his vocals.

Wood was engaged to Manson in 2010, but earlier this year came forward with allegations of abuse against the 52 year old shock rocker. “The name of my abuser is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson,” she wrote on Instagram in February. “He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years. I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission.”

There’s nothing subtle about Wood’s choice of song. While the lines “Don’t give up / You’ve got a reason to live” go out to Wood’s fellow survivors, Manson’s name actually appears in the original song lyrics.

The second half of the bridge goes, “Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson / You’re all fakes, run to your mansions / Come around, we’ll kick your asses.” Wood omitted Love’s name, instead pausing while raising her middle finger before saying Manson’s name. See this around the 4.30 mark in the below clip.
