Billy Joel to Play One-Off Show At the MCG This December

The Victorian government’s Always Live initiative has announced its latest recruit: New York City legend Billy Joel. Joel will be in Australia for one night only, performing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, 10th December.

The 73-year-old Joel has been no stranger to Australian shores over his five decade career – his first tour down under was in the mid-1970s. However, it has been nearly ten years since Joel’s most recent Australian visit, for the Stone Music Festival in April 2013.

Billy Joel recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his debut album, Cold Spring Harbor (1971). His defining release, Piano Man, came out in 1973. It has been more than 20 years since Joel released any new material, but his touring schedule has remained relatively constant.

His back catalogue continues to sell in large quantities. By some metrics, Joel ranks as the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time and the third best-selling solo artist. He’s won six Grammy awards and in 1999 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Regarding his upcoming performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Joel said, “It’s been a really long time since I’ve been [to Australia]. I’m really looking forward to coming and I’m bringing the whole family and we’re going to enjoy it. I’ll see you there.” Joel last performed in Melbourne as part of his 2008 world tour.
