Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this Love Letter To A Record series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
Sammy Honeysett – JET, Get Born (2003)
Dear Get Born,
You were the most played album I had for years & I claimed you as my own until my brother admitted defeat in getting the chance to win you back. You’re full of serious bluesy indifference and purely raw, diverse, loud tunes.
It was insane discovering true raw rock with inspiration from the 70’s at such a young age. I spent a lot of time with my mum, who was a pop culture queen so bands like JET were far from anything she thought I’d be interested in. I used to listen to the album over & over again, never getting bored. I’d genuinely get excited when their songs would come on… I still know all the words to all their tracks.
It came to me at such a pivotal and impressionable point in my short little life — I was exposed to this completely different type of music from not only my older brother but my neighbour nextdoor. In 2003 I was 6 years old and probably shouldn’t have been listening to bands like JET, as they just didn’t fit the social norms back then or whatever, but it precipitated some kind of major change and potentially moulded my love for rock.
Being so young I remember feeling like I could be and do whatever I wanted. My favourite track that I absolutely and unconditionally love is ‘Get What You Need’. For me musically it sums up the hard rock sound but stays bold, catchy & colourful. I’ll never forget about the Get Born album. It’s one that I’ll listen to when I’m happy, sad & just want to ponder about the good times.
