Merpire has shared her first new music in years: A single entitled ‘Premonition’. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter both co-wrote and co-produced the track alongside James Seymour at North Melbourne’s Melrose Place Studios. In a press statement, Merpire has cheekily described her comeback single as her “horniest song yet” and was inspired by reading The Name Of The Wind by fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss. “The lyrics and scene-building of this song were inspired by the main character in the novel, and the way they felt about another character,” she said.
“The honest detail is achingly relatable. It got me thinking about the most intense moments of a crush. The lyrics just flowed from there, but it was a hard song to produce. It sounded like two different songs for a while. We kept at it, and eventually James magically and skillfully sewed elements together to sound the way I was visualising the scene: kind of stalky, woozy and dramatic.”
An accompanying music video has also been shared for ‘Premonition’, directed by Merpire herself. According to production notes, the clip was “recorded in tropical Queensland, during a lightning storm” and features footage recorded by Dominic Buckham. It can be viewed below.
