DaBaby Cops Backlash Following Homophobic Comments At Rolling Loud Miami

Rapper DaBaby drew controversy during his set at Rolling Loud Miami over the weekend (U.S. time).

The festival is one of the largest hip hop events to make its return in the U.S. since the pandemic began.

Across the weekend, Rolling Loud Miami brought some of the genre’s heavy hitters out including A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Post Malone and Megan Thee Stallion. Even The Kid LAROI featured on Friday’s lineup, adding to his growing list of accomplishments.

But for DaBaby, while he had an amped crowd throughout his set (livestreamed online too), the homophobic comments he made during his performance stood out as the main takeaways.

Viewers on social media immediately took issue with the rapper, whose comments included:

“If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up.”

Adding more fuel to the fire, DaBaby followed with, “Ladies, if your p***y smell like water, put your cellphone lighter up. Fellas, if you ain’t sucking d**k in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up.”

Following the backlash, DaBaby went on his own social media to address it all, but seemed to instead make it worse for himself. Claiming his comments were ‘twisted up’ and misunderstood, DaBaby went in. It was a lot.

“I’ma address this weak-ass internet sh*t one time and then I’ma get back to giving my love to my fans,” he said. “What me and my fans do at the live show, it don’t concern you n***as on the internet, or you bitter b*****s on the internet.”

“It’s not your business… What I do at a live show is for the audience at the live show, it’ll never translate correctly to someone looking a little five-six second clip from they goddamn crib on they phone. It just don’t work like that.”

At one point, someone lobbed a shoe at the rapper during the set, though it’s unsure if that was connected to DaBaby’s comments.

If that wasn’t enough, the same performance drew criticism for the guest appearance by Tory Lanez. DaBaby, who has been a frequent collaborator of Megan Thee Stallion, brought the Canadian rapper out in a costume before performing ‘SKAT’.

Lanez has continued to release music following his felony assault charge in 2020, when the rapper was accused of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in Los Angeles. His two records, Daystar and Loner have kept Lanez in the spotlight, though Megan Thee Stallion fans were understandably not cool with seeing him and DaBaby together on stage.

Megan Thee Stallion hasn’t commented on DaBaby’s performance, though the likes of T.I., Amber Rose and others have weighed in on the set.
